Twitter acquires TweetDeck

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Twitter has acquired TweetDeck, an application for organizing the display of tweets, for more than $40 million in a mix of cash and stock, according to sources close to the deal. TweetDeck has been the subject of speculation about deals for months.

TechCrunch surfaced reports, citing a $40 million-$50 million acquisition. The deal has yet to be announced, but papers finalizing the deal were signed Monday.

Sn0wbreeze 2.2 to Offer Baseband Preservation Mode

iH8snow, the developer behind Sn0wbreeze, iREB, and f0recast has just announced that he is working on a new version of Sn0wbreeze that will offer baseband preservation mode. This feature was first implemented in TinyUmbrella which allows preserving iPhone 4 only baseband while upgrading to iOS 4.1 but this tool stopped couldn't preserve the baseband while upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 ! Fixing All App Problems

The iPhone Dev Team has just released the third beta version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 to convert tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 to untethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 4G and iPad. The third beta is still for testing only so stay away if you rely on your device or care for an unlock.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b2: fixes all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). This is the only change from the first beta that was released earlier today.

Redsn0w 0.9.7b3: This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content). So now embedded videos in iTunes work. Just follow the guide posted here to achieve the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1.

Ambarella release iOne image processing chip for hybrid cameras

Image processor manufacturer, Amabarella has announced the iOne Android-based camera System-on-Chip (SoC). The iOne combines the company's image and video processing experience with Android's data communication capabilities, offering camera makers the ability to make more easily connected devices. The three-core processor is capable of simultaneous encoding of both a 1080p30 HD video stream and either still photos or a smaller video stream for fast broadcast via methods such as WiFi. The chip can also decode most popular video formats for streaming and replaying HD content amongst other features that could add significant functionality to future devices.

Activision sues Electronic Arts, seeks $400 million over Infinity Ward

The corporate warfare between Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts is getting hotter than a hand grenade.

Activision on Tuesday pulled EA into a lawsuit it had filed in April against two prominent game developers that Activision had fired in March. The developers, Jason West and Vincent Zampella, had created Activision's blockbuster Call of Duty franchise as heads of Infinity Ward, a studio Activision bought in 2003.

In the amended lawsuit, Activision names EA as a defendant, accusing the Redwood City, Calif., publisher of hatching a secret plot to "destabilize, disrupt and ... destroy Infinity Ward." The lawsuit accused EA of working through talent management firm Creative Artists Agency to "hijack" West and Zampella from Infinity Ward, based in Encino.

Exclusive: Electronic Arts Planning 'Madden Curse: The Movie'

What started as a simple joke may now become a motion picture.

Electronic Arts is developing "Madden Curse," a sports comedy that incorporates the infamous jinx, believed to strike NFL players who appear on the cover of EA's popular "Madden" video game with injury or poor performance.

The story will follow a former Madden video game champion who is forced out of retirement just as he finds himself on the corner of the game's cover -- and subject to the curse.

Pat O'Brien, VP of EA Entertainment, is spearheading the project as one of its producers.

Apple's official sanctioning of EA's 99c iOS game sale splits developer opinion

In the midst of the debate about EA's 99c App Store assault, one important viewpoint has been overlooked.

In other words, what would Steve Jobs do?

Personalisation aside, it's a valid question. When the biggest mobile publisher in the West cuts the price on most of its iOS back catalog, you'd think Apple would have an opinion. And that view has been made clear with the platform holder running banner ads on iTunes promoting EA's Games For The Holidays price cut.

Nvidia: We Are Not Building Chipsets Anymore.

Earlier this year Nvidia Corp. merged chipset and system-on-chip development teams in order to strengthen the Tegra product line. On Thursday chief executive officer of Nvidia officially said that the company was no longer building chipsets, which probably means that the firm no longer orders appropriate chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

"We are not building any more chipsets, we are building SoCs now. We are building Tegra SoCs, and so we are going to take integration to a new level. [...] The chipset business [has] not grown largely this year because we have not really been expanding the sales of it," said Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia.

Word Lens: an augmented reality language translator for iPhone

Word Lens is one of those apps that grabs your attention the first time you see it in action. Created by Quest Visual, It is an iPhone-based optical character recognition (OCR) application used for language translation. In real-world usage, it will translate a foreign language sign in an instant using your camera. Word Lens uses OCR to single out the letters in an image captured by your camera. It identifies letters, builds the words and looks them up in its built-in dictionary. Once the words are identified, translation from one language to another is easy.
